A Day
Observed

A story presented by

Scene 1:
‘Morning’

It was a bright cold day with glassy surfaces that looked hard.
Into the square frame he stood as if in a dream.

What emerged was precisely what he expected to find: a reflection of memory images. Contemplating his face in the photo frame he waited.

By the steady hands of his watch, he listened to time. Every day for the past sixteen days he saw her. Silver lingered in the crease of
an open book.

A Venini art glass vase 'Bolle' by Tapio Wirkkala. This stunning sculpture made in Murano 1985was part of the 'Bolle' series, initially launched in 1966. A very thin, mouth-blown grey and aquamarine glass fused vase using the 'incalmo' technique. The vase was part of a larger collection of art glass pieces designed by Tapio Wirkkala and manufactured by Venini Murano Venice in the 1970s.

In 1921 Paolo Venini and Giacomo Cappellin founded a company that would become world famous. Under the artistic directions of Vittorio Zecchin the Vetri Soffiati Cappellin Venini & C. become the name in glass during the 1920's. Over the following decades, countless world-renowned artists like Napoleone Martinuzzi, Carlo Scarpa, Tomaso Buzzi, Fulvio Bianconi, Tuni Zuccheri, Thomas Stearns, Toots Zynski and Ettore Sottsass have injected their own unique style and direction into designing works for Venini. The creations of Venini have received several awards, and today Venini is one of the leading art glass makers in Murano.

An eminent artist and designer, Tapio Wirkkala has contributed to making the Finnish school famous worldwide. When Wirkkala designed his first objects for Venini in the mid 1960s, he was already an internationally acclaimed figure, boasting prominent projects in various fields of design. His time designing with the renowned Italian glassmaker's represented an interesting phase in his versatile career and, at the same time, deeply influenced the glassmaking world in Murano. In fact, Tapio Wirkkala deserves the merit of bringing the “Incalmo” technique back into the spotlight, a technique that he often combined with the “Mezzafiligrana” (half-filigree) and “Murrine” techniques, thanks to the skill of the master glassmakers and the rich colour palette. His works are exhibited in all the main museums of art and design world.

The vase is Venini model number 503.01. Signed with incised signature 'venini italia tw' on the base. it has its original sticker in the middle of the body, and is presented in excellent original condition.
