Very few watches made by Switzerland's most recognizable watchmaker do not immediately scream the design work of the famous crown. The Chameleon watch is very much one of those rare exceptions. A watch that was as feminine as with was innovative allows the wearer to easily switch out the band from the original gold brick bracelet to a host of leather watch bands, depending on the mood, occasion or outfit needing a match or contrast.

The Rolex Chameleon was introduced in the 1950s during a period when Rolex was expanding beyond purely functional tool watches into more expressive forms of design. Conceived as an elegant ladies watch with interchangeable straps, the Chameleon allowed the wearer to alter the character of the piece in seconds, shifting effortlessly between evening wear and daywear. Rolex marketed the model as a watch with its own “wardrobe,” reflecting the growing influence of fashion and personal style in postwar luxury culture.

Produced primarily in 18k yellow gold, the Chameleon appeared in a wide variety of forms ranging from restrained circular cases to elongated and highly sculptural designs characteristic of the 1960s. Many examples incorporated textured bezels, woven bracelets, bark finished surfaces, or gem set details, while maintaining the discreet proportions expected of fine ladies watches of the era. Beneath the decorative exterior, the watches retained Rolex’s commitment to precision, housing manually wound movements finished to the same standards as the brand’s more traditional models.

Today, the Chameleon remains one of the most distinctive and lesser known expressions of mid century Rolex design. Produced in relatively small numbers and often preserved as treasured personal pieces, these watches represent a period when Rolex embraced elegance and versatility with unusual freedom. Their appeal lies not only in their rarity, but in the way they capture the glamour and optimism of postwar jewelry design while remaining unmistakably Rolex in construction and quality.

The watch is powered by a eighteen jewel, manually wound Rolex movement caliber 1401. The case back of the inside of the watch bears full Swiss hallmarks for 750, eighteen carat yellow gold, along with Swiss control marks. There is also the Rolex branding and logo applied in the center, along with the original unique Rolex serial number. All of which can be seen in the image provided on the listing. The bracelet is stamped '750'. It is believed that this element of the watch was contracted out by Rolex, and is not Rolex made or signed, but original to the watch, and correct.

The condition of the watch is exceptional throughout. The bracelet appears to have never been polished and the dial is original on the watch. Often, these can be refinished over the years due to the poor sealing of these types of cases – this is not the case here. There is a little patina to it, but it is not noticable to the naked eye. The "Swiss" stamping at the foot of the dial is present. One of the more unusual elements to the dial is the addition of the "Orchid" name, this time in pink writing, in an Asian inspired font.

This unique timepiece seamlessly blends style, beauty, and functionality, offering the wearer the best of both a stunning bracelet and a premium Swiss watch all in an adorable 16mm wide case!

There is no original box or Rolex paperwork accompnaying the watch. The original, beautiful, Rolex blue glass hang tag will be presented with the watch. A rare gem we have not encountered before. One original, black, band is accompanying the watch that is unused. However, due to the age, it has dried out, and is not functioning now. We will provide a hand made brand new band of your choice to accompany the watch, the original Rolex buckle can be attached to. Also, should any more straps be needed, we will help in having any colour and material bands made at an additiional cost.
