A Day

A story presented by

Scene 1:

It was a bright cold day with glassy surfaces that looked hard.
Into the square frame he stood as if in a dream.

What emerged was precisely what he expected to find: a reflection of memory images. Contemplating his face in the photo frame he waited.

By the steady hands of his watch, he listened to time. Every day for the past sixteen days he saw her. Silver lingered in the crease of
an open book.

So absorbed in his thoughts
he hardly saw the platinum catch-all, the key, or the revelation locked inside those lapis lazuli cufflinks tossed unmistakably in cold blue.

Scene 2:

He remained.Trapped in that enormous room,
unmistakably familiar in feeling yet so peculiar.

Above the mantle was
displayed an Austrian hound
of impeccable integrity.

His gaze fell on the letter opener. By accident she had learnt more about his life from the contents of that letter than anywhere.

the sun. Through the hypnotism
of precious metals there
emerged a dark slender shadow.

All this time light was receding from the room.

“I should explain why I spend so much time here”, said the silhouette. Leaves moved like shadows across her eyes.

It’s not too late to turn back. Time moved with faint sounds.

Venini hourglass. Hand-blown lurid Murano glass.

He unscrewed the telescopic cup, rolled and remained still. Black eyes on the dice prophesied a new cycle.

Scene 4:

Everything went crashing black.

Pale graceful hands placed
the gold stud box delicately
on the table.

He lit a match to make sure the watch had really stopped. Smoke lingered from its vesta case.

A stunning and quite unique fourteen carat yellow and green gold money clip featuring a solid gold 1911 U.S minted 2 1/2 Dollar coin mounted into the center.  The clip is highlighted with a cabochon sapphire at the point where the cash or cards can be inserted.  The most interesting and unique element to this clip is the solid green gold telescopic pencil set to the left of it.  

This piece is not signed Cartier, but it is without doubt a piece made for Cartier, New York.  There is the original owner's name and address engraved into the back of the clip.  However, most of this has now been either polished or for away from use.  In the center circle on the back still remains the very prestigious address of 280 Park Ave.  The original name is no longer fully legible.  Along the bottom part, where the slightest part of the '14k' can be seen to the offset left part, would have been the Cartier signature.  Hence why the 14k is offset left.

Research on similar pieces have unearthed an almost identical money clip with gold coin and cabochon sapphire in the same place.  The rear of which has stamped Cartier reference numbers on it.  The exact same propelling pencil has been found, signed Cartier.  Also, the featuring of a cabochon sapphire on the piece is a trademark symbol of Cartier.  It has featured on many men's accessories and jewellery piece from this time, and is still widely sued across the brand today.  With all of these factors combined with the overall beauty and quality of this piece, it is fair to conclude that this piece was made for Cartier.  However, it cannot be conclusively described as such due to the lack of signature, or reference stamps.

Regardless of the maker, this is one of the finest money clips to come out of the art Deco period, and remains in superb condition.  Made in America. Circa 1930
