cartier-santos-galbee-moonphase
Cartier Santos Galbée Moonphase

A eighteen carat gold and stainless steel Cartier Santos Galbée with factory moonphase dial. Perhaps alongside the Tank, the Santos is the most iconic of all Cartier watch designs. Not only is it very distinctive to the eye, but it also carries the title of the first men’s wristwatch ever made. A relationship between the early Brazilian aviator Santos Dumont and Louis Cartier led to the creation of the watch that bore his name. After complaining to Louis Cartier about how difficult it was to check a pocket watch while trying to fly, Cartier came up with a solution for his intrepid Brazilian friend. And so, the Cartier Santos was born. The November 1906 film, which shows Santos’s 21.5 seconds of flight, also features the first wristwatch hard at work!

This watch is powered by the Cartier quartz caliber 19 movement. Aside from being very unique in its overall look, the watch features many of the classic design cues: the screw-down crystal frame and the bracelet set with all the screws. The dial is a departure from the classic Cartier: although we see the Roman numerals with the hidden signature at the 1 on 10 o’clock, chemin de fer minute track. This model features a rare, interior date calendar. The conventional sword-blued steel hands are now joied with the crescent shaped calendar hand. The iconic blue sapphire-set winding crown is present. Leaving the best feature last is the striking and legendary comolication in watch making; the moonpahse. This was added to very few Cartier models during this period. Its most iconic. The Tank, and the Santos.

The dial itself is original an in excellent condition. There is a very small scratch by the center of the center pinion, see the close up images. It is not overly obvious, and is mentioned for full transparency. There is also a patina to the classic eggshell colour dial, which only enhances this vintage beauty.

The watch is presented in excellent original condition, most likely unpolished with strong lines and clean throughout. Of all of the iterations of this model, this is by far the most rare in the smaller size, 24mm x 34mm. The watch is presented with no box or paperwork. The watch is running well, and keeping good time. The service history is not known.

A cult classic worn by many icons over the years, this is now becoming the must-have Cartier again, and who what is not to admire about the moonphase version? With the Santos making a huge comeback in the last few years, these rare late 1980's version are creeping up in price. With production number 67, this is an early example of a very limited production.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0689/2617/files/0008-1_d23e1f0a-d455-4330-b328-dba686d110fe.jpg?v=1788923765
