A Day
Observed

A story presented by

Scene 1:
‘Morning’

It was a bright cold day with glassy surfaces that looked hard.
Into the square frame he stood as if in a dream.

What emerged was precisely what he expected to find: a reflection of memory images. Contemplating his face in the photo frame he waited.

By the steady hands of his watch, he listened to time. Every day for the past sixteen days he saw her. Silver lingered in the crease of
an open book.

So absorbed in his thoughts
he hardly saw the platinum catch-all, the key, or the revelation locked inside those lapis lazuli cufflinks tossed unmistakably in cold blue.

A solid eighteen carat gold Cartier Calandre wristwatch on bracelet. A very unique and eye catching reference from the Cartier watch line. This is perhaps one of the lesser seen models in the range of wrist watch models from this storied French icon. The Calandre, or "Grill" was first launched in the 1930's and was very much related to the automotive revolution that was being undertaken by the rising star of the car manufacturing world; Ettore Bugatti. The son of a famous cabinet maker, Ettore, a French-Italian born child was drawn to the arts before his interests shifted toward engineering and the automobile. Much is written about his designs and success from both and aesthetic and a performance perspective. This is perhaps what drew Cartier to be inspired by what this man, and his company, were undertaking during the Jazz Age.

The shape of the watch very much takes on the appearance of the grill of one of Bugatti's famous early race cars. Some, mistakenly, call this watch the Étrier or Cloche. Etrier being French for stirrup does make sense, as the case design of the Calandre looks resemble that of a stirrup. However, it is documented that the model is based on the radiator grill from a car, and it is believed that a model was made with 'EB' initials on the dial! Therefore ending the discussion!

The dial on this example an example of the iconic Cartier design; egg shell dial, black Roman numerals, chemin de fer minute track, blue steeled hands and the discreet "hidden" signature at the ten o'clock position, and "Swiss" stamp below the six o'clock marker. Set into the distinctive Cartier crown is the classic cabochon sapphire.

As aforementioned, the bracelet, in solid eighteen carat yellow gold fits beautifully onto the watch. However, although solid eighteen carat yellow gold, it is not made by Cartier. It is stamped "750" on the tongue an was clearly made for the watch. From Cartier, the only bracelet we have found on this model was the classic "beads of rice" bracelet. This actually suits the watch better and is very comfortable on the wrist, as well as being beautifully made.

The fully signed and hallmarked watch case back is held in place by three small gold screws, beneath which is a Cartier quartz movement. The watch has never been polished over the years, and is presented in stunning condition throughout.

This model was re-introduced at a great time in Cartier's history. The houses had once again been unified. The Cartier Museum was now up and running, as was the Cartier Foundation. The business had achieved over $1 billion in sales. This is a rare chance to own an unusual piece of vintage Cartier history.

The watch has recently been serviced. It does not come with any paperwork and there is no Cartier box present.

Made in Switzerland, circa 1980's.
