A Day

Scene 1:

It was a bright cold day with glassy surfaces that looked hard.
Into the square frame he stood as if in a dream.

What emerged was precisely what he expected to find: a reflection of memory images. Contemplating his face in the photo frame he waited.

By the steady hands of his watch, he listened to time. Every day for the past sixteen days he saw her. Silver lingered in the crease of
an open book.

So absorbed in his thoughts
he hardly saw the platinum catch-all, the key, or the revelation locked inside those lapis lazuli cufflinks tossed unmistakably in cold blue.

Scene 2:

He remained.Trapped in that enormous room,
unmistakably familiar in feeling yet so peculiar.

Above the mantle was
displayed an Austrian hound
of impeccable integrity.

His gaze fell on the letter opener. By accident she had learnt more about his life from the contents of that letter than anywhere.

the sun. Through the hypnotism

All this time light was receding from the room.

“I should explain why I spend so much time here”, said the silhouette. Leaves moved like shadows across her eyes.

It’s not too late to turn back. Time moved with faint sounds.

He unscrewed the telescopic cup, rolled and remained still. Black eyes on the dice prophesied a new cycle.

Scene 4:

Everything went crashing black.

Pale graceful hands placed
the gold stud box delicately
on the table.

He lit a match to make sure the watch had really stopped. Smoke lingered from its vesta case.

A three piece cocktail shaker in silver plate and oak.  This very rare and stunning, and perhaps most beautifully designed version of the bell cocktail shaker, is a real Art Deco talking piece for the home bar.  A very streamline, classic three piece shaker, meaning the stepped metal cap unscrews to allow the decanting of the shaken cocktail.  Then the bottom of the oak wood handle unscrews to add the ice and ingredients into the final piece, the base.

The bell form for shaker was a popular one, with may different companies, both in England and America coming up with their own designs. The idea of the town crier bringing everyone in the town/village to call to relay important information makes sense as to why this novel theme would be adopted into barware. The bar being a place where everyone would congregate and put the world to rights. Not only that, it was very easy to 'shake' and mix the drink. Some versions have a ringer, or the "clapper" inside, such as this presented example, that strike the inside of the shaker, as well as further mix the drink internally, making a ringing sound in the process!

Being a classic three-piece shaker, it is very easy to use and clean.  The concept of also hiding alcohol related items in plain sight during Prohibition in American could also explain the design, which was born in an around this time.  There were a number of bar items that were made in various non alcohol related forms during the 1920's and '30's. 

Advertised in the December 1937 House & Garden, in time for the Holidays; "To a merry host or hostess send this newest cocktail shaker. Town crier, handled like a dinner bell, invites folks to 'come and get it'."

The shaker is in superb condition throughout.  It was made in England by silversmith William Suckling in silver plate on brass, and is signed on the base, circa 1930's
