A Day
Observed

A story presented by

Scene 1:
‘Morning’

It was a bright cold day with glassy surfaces that looked hard.
Into the square frame he stood as if in a dream.

What emerged was precisely what he expected to find: a reflection of memory images. Contemplating his face in the photo frame he waited.

By the steady hands of his watch, he listened to time. Every day for the past sixteen days he saw her. Silver lingered in the crease of
an open book.

So absorbed in his thoughts
he hardly saw the platinum catch-all, the key, or the revelation locked inside those lapis lazuli cufflinks tossed unmistakably in cold blue.

unmistakably familiar in feeling yet so peculiar.

His gaze fell on the letter opener. By accident she had learnt more about his life from the contents of that letter than anywhere.

All this time light was receding from the room.

A solid eighteen carat white gold Rolex Pearlmaster with a factory diamond set bezel and diamond set mother of pearl dial. Rolex’s Pearlmaster is the brand at its most jewellery-forward, built with the same uncompromising architecture as its core precious-metal references and finished to a distinctly higher level of decorative detail. This Pearlmaster reference 86289 is crafted in 18 ct white gold and set with a stunning factory diamond bezel, a configuration that balances clarity and brilliance without losing the discipline that makes a Rolex feel purposeful on the wrist.

The dial is the centrepiece: natural mother-of-pearl with diamond-set hour markers. In changing light it shifts from cool silver to soft, iridescent tones, giving the watch depth and character without ever reading loud. Paired with white gold, the palette stays clean and modern, while the diamond bezel frames the dial with a crisp, architectural line of sparkle.

To understand this exotic Rolex luxury timepiece is to know the history of the line. The Pearlmaster arrived in 1992 as Rolex’s most jewellery-forward interpretation of the Datejust idea, built around precious metal cases and gem-setting as the point, not the flourish. In Rolex launched the collection with a purpose-built bracelet: a solid gold, rounded five-piece link design created specifically for the Pearlmaster, always finished with the concealed Crownclasp for an uninterrupted, bracelet-like silhouette.

Across the 1990s and 2000s, the Pearlmaster steadily separated itself from the “Datejust” category by leaning harder into high-jewellery execution: diamond bezels, pavé dials, and gemstone-set bracelets, with Rolex reserving its most meticulous setting work for the line. The range also broadened in scale, moving beyond its smaller early references into larger case sizes, eventually including 34 mm and this, the 39 mm executions that wore more like statement pieces than traditional dress watches.  In 2005, Rolex’s proprietary Everose gold enters the broader Oyster world and became a part of the Pearlmaster’s material vocabulary, reinforcing the line’s role as Rolex’s precious-metal showroom.

By the late 2010s, as gem-set options proliferated across Rolex’s core families, the Pearlmaster’s “separate collection” logic began to feel less necessary. The line is widely reported to have been discontinued in 2022, making this one of the very last models that will ever be produced, closing a roughly three-decade run and leaving the Pearlmaster as a very specific chapter in Rolex history: a Datejust at heart, but engineered and finished like a piece of jewellery first

Finished on the signature Pearlmaster bracelet, the watch wears like fine jewellery but retains the substance and everyday confidence that separates Rolex from traditional dress pieces. It is an ideal expression of the Pearlmaster idea, precious materials, exceptional finishing, and a design language that remains unmistakably Rolex. It is fully linked. The watch is presented in like new condition. Unpolished case and bracelet, it is a complete and full set with the outer sleeve, outer box, inner, large size jewel box, and papers and warranty card dated for 2021. The watch came from the original owner who was presented it as a gift and rarely wore it.

If you are looking for an exceptional, high quality, haute jewellery level Rolex, then this watch will more than fit the bill. A complete and perfect example, that is no longer being offered in the Rolex lineup.
