Between these two key figures they were responsible for some of the best designed objects ever to come out of Europe in the 20th Century. Not only did they design and produce stunning pieces, they also developed new techniques of finishing metals. This elephant is an example of this. The brass base metal was 'cooked' for a few minutes in a mixture of chemicals that caused oxidation on the surface. Depending on its duration, the finish changed to brown through to deep black. Some of the designs were later polished in a few places, for the brass to shine through, as can be seen on the elephant's tusks here. This procedure created a new design element, allowing two colours on the same object. Karl Hagenauer introduced this technique at a Viennese fair, but within months it was copied by other manufacturers of brass figures. The elephant is fully marked on the base, and dates circa 1950's.
A Dunhill 'Jet Plane' Lighter that is modeled after the famous American F-86 Sabre transonic jet fighter aircraft. There is a great chance that Hardmuth provided all the leads for Waterman's propelling pencils at the time. So, perhaps this was a 'Thank you' gift for the twenty-five years of business between the two companies. Regardless of the hypothesis on the historical importance of this piece, it is a truly a wonderful find. It is in all original condition, unmolested or polished and includes the the aforementioned presentation box. It will be of interest to many parties; pen collectors, pig enthusiasts, Mordan collectors and anyone who likes unusual and rare desk pieces. They symbolise abundance, wealth and strength. “Schwein gehabt” (meaning “got lucky there!” though literally: “got pig!”) is an oft-used expression in Germany. The simple reason for them being linked with good fortune is that to possess plenty of pigs was a sign of wealth and prosperity in the Middle Ages. In late Middle English þ (or 'thorn') came to be written identically with y, so that ‘the’ could be written ye. This spelling (usually ye) was kept as a convenient abbreviation in handwriting down to the 19th century, and in printers' types during the 15th and 16th centuries. Wild Horses

A patinated brass study of a pair of wild horses. The piece has a real spirit, freedom and energy to it, and lends the viewer to enjoy the bounding exuberance on display. The piece is made in the Werkstätte Hagenauer which was a Viennese metal manufacturer started by Carl Hagenauer in 1898, and succeeded by his sons Karl and Franz Hagenauer. Between these two key figures they were responsible for some of the best designed objects ever to come out of Europe in the 20th Century. Not only did they design and produce stunning pieces, they also developed new techniques of finishing metals.

These horses are an example of this. The brass base metal was 'cooked' for a few minutes in a mixture of chemicals that caused oxidation on the surface. Depending on its duration, the finish changed to brown through to deep black. Some of the designs were later polished in a few places, for the brass to shine through, which is not the case here. This procedure created a new design element, allowing two colours on the same object. Karl Hagenauer introduced this technique at a Viennese fair, but within months it was copied by other manufacturers of brass figures.

Although fairly abstract in their execution, Hagenauer was still able to beautifully sculpt the fine features of each horse. There are superbly carved lines finely constructing the horse's faces, accentuated with smaller details, such as the nostrils. Another example of the fine sculpting is seen in the horse's tails; both capturing energy, and detail. The sculpture is fully marked on the hand cut teak base. The condition throughout is superb with no damage. Made in Vienna, Austria, and dates circa 1950's.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0689/2617/products/0016-1_4286100c-fadc-4b9f-8d84-3be272f40986.jpg?v=1618617703
hermes-horse-head-calendar
Hermès Horse Head Calendar

A silver and gold plated desk calendar adorned with a fine casting of a horse head. This wonderful and exceptionally rare equestrian themed desk accessory is from this 'horse head', 'Tête de Cheval', series from the luxury French atelier, of which they introduced a large variety of items for the home and person. There is a simple and elegant frame which sits next to the detailed head of the horse. This horse head, as it rears forward, can be used to wrap a finger around in order to aid the carrying of the piece, if so required. The days of the month are printed in a beautiful font onto glossy finished soft square pieces of card. Some are double sided, but not all. Each one is complete, and in excellent original condition.

The calendar is signed "Hermès Paris" on the base, along with the maker mark for Ravinet D'Enfert. D'Enfert made the majority of the larger homeware pieces for Hermès in the mid to late part of the 20th Century. The item is presented in superb, original condition, and are of the quality and beauty one would come to expect. Made in France, circa 1970's.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0689/2617/products/0008-1_b14cb740-0c4d-4dff-a2fb-8034f6ed296f.jpg?v=1619032078
set-of-six-ash-tray
Set of Six Ash Tray

A boxed set of six sterling silver cigar rests, or individual ash trays. This superb and unique set are designed to be the perfect smokers companion. They can either sit on a flat surface, or, thanks to a patented sprung clip, be clipped onto a surface.

The design of each piece allows a cigar to rest in the recessed channel, and then for ash to be collected by the bowl portion. These sets were designed to be handed out by a host for guests to relax, smoke and have their own accessible ash tray. It is rare to find a matching set of six, and neatly housed in their original box.

Each ash tray is stamped along the interior of the rest with English assay control marks for having been made in London, 1902. They have the maker mark for Samuel Jacob a well regarded silversmith founded in 1892. Each rest also has registered pattern number for the clip that was developed. A charming and rare set in excellent original condition.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0689/2617/products/0010-1_321e4c1f-afe9-4b22-83c4-0973275d04d6.jpg?v=1623857163
hermes-horse-head-pen-tray
Hermès Horse Head Pen Tray

A silver plate, engine turned pen tray adorned with a fine casting of a horse head. This wonderful equestrian themed piece is from this 'horse head' series from the luxury French atelier, of which they introduced a large variety of items for the home and person. There is a long tray coming down from the head of the horse, wide and long enough to support a number of pens, or office supplies. The center of the tray has the classic barley style engine turned pattern running through it.

The ash tray is signed "Hermès Paris" on the base, along with the maker mark for Ravinet D'Enfert. D'Enfert made the majority of the larger homeware pieces for Hermès in the mid to late part of the 20th Century.

The item is presented in superb, original condition, and are of the quality and beauty one would come to expect. Made in France, circa 1980's.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0689/2617/products/0002-1_ff0b8ce3-9df2-4906-a838-a6161ffce9e1.jpg?v=1628616693
