A Day

A story presented by

Scene 1:
‘Morning’

Into the square frame he stood as if in a dream.

What emerged was precisely what he expected to find: a reflection of memory images. Contemplating his face in the photo frame he waited.

A sterling silver cigarette lighter and dispenser. This stunning and incredibly rare piece was produced by Shreve, Crump & Low, the oldest purveyor of luxury goods in North America for Cartier. Shreve, Crump & Low were founded in Boston in 1796, and have produced many beautiful items over the years including trophies for both the Davis Cup and Cy Young Awards. This magnificent piece was retailed by both Cartier and Dunhill, this one is stamped "Cartier", and is regarded as being the only known example of this piece retailed by the world's foremost luxury retailer. This piece was first patented in 1928 by Clark Warner Parker and released c1930. A cigarette would be placed in depository under top lid. When the lever on right side is pulled all the way down, it drops the cigarette which is then dispensed, lit. It operates with flint and petrol (lighter fluid) to produce a flame which is then sucked in to light one's cigarette by means of an internal bellows. The base of the box is marked with the Shreve, Crump & Low makers mark, 'Sterling' mark and the stamped Cartier reference numbers, along with a Shreve, Crump & Low registration  number.
