A Day
Observed

A story presented by

Scene 1:
‘Morning’

It was a bright cold day with glassy surfaces that looked hard.
Into the square frame he stood as if in a dream.

What emerged was precisely what he expected to find: a reflection of memory images. Contemplating his face in the photo frame he waited.

By the steady hands of his watch, he listened to time. Every day for the past sixteen days he saw her. Silver lingered in the crease of
an open book.

So absorbed in his thoughts
he hardly saw the platinum catch-all, the key, or the revelation locked inside those lapis lazuli cufflinks tossed unmistakably in cold blue.

A solid eighteen carat gold Audermars Piguet gentleman's dress watch.  This is one of the most unusual of designs to come out of the AP design studios in the 1950's, and is a fabulous illustration of how varied, and distinctive the design team was at this luxury watch atelier.  Although so much smaller than a number of their rivals at the time, the quality of manufacturing and design were as good, and if not better.  None more so than this watch given the moniker "Disco Volante", or "Flying Saucer" by Italian collectors.  An example of this watch is part of the Audemars Piguet Museum, with another example has recently been on exhibition at the Espace Horloger de la Vallée de Joux.  The reference 5093 is fitted with the exceptional, ultra thin, hand wound mechanical calibre 2003 movement.  The dial is unrestored and in exceptional condition, with only a small mark to the dial close to the 10 o'clock marker.  The colour of the dial overall is exceptional, with the exposed gold areas shiny and bright and the white areas clean.  The dial is a thing of beauty and captures the light in an extraordinary way.  The case has an unusual design of expanding concentric circles, as opposed to the hobnail cut versions more frequently seen.  The condition of the case, and the original marked 'AP 750' solid eighteen carat gold fine brick link bracelet, is superb.  The watch, although not large, wears very well on a gentleman's wrist, and the bracelet is long enough to fit a larger wrist.  The head archivist of Audemars Piguet has confirmed that this watch, case number 15XXX, movement number 74XXX, was made and sold originally in 1959.
